Onboarding Strategy 30-60-90 Day plan  â€" Put together an action plan for what you expect to accomplish in the first 30, 60 and 90 days. It can be as detailed as necessary. It should also include areas where you will ask for help. Yes, you WILL need help and you WILL ask for it … politely. Excel In a nice way. No one likes a braggart and a know it all. As you succeed stay humble. Rarely does anyone do everything 100% solo. Recognize and when possible reward the people that have helped you onboard to the business. Trust in the Current People and Process. This is not your companies first goat rodeo. They know how the business operates. They know what works and what doesn’t. They will likely have policies and procedures in place. Day One and Week One are not the times to push those boundaries. Unless you were hired to be a change agent … give yourself some time to learn the current processes. Later on as you become and expert in #1 (Know Your Business) then you can and should seek areas to optimize. Expect Challenges. Expect to Fail. It Happens When challenges occur, when failure seems imminent. Use the SBO method. Where SBO is the Step Back Optimism. The idea is to take a deep breath and take a step back … literally or figuratively … depending upon where you are in the process. Then look at everything that can go right. Instead of focusing on all the things that might go wrong. It’s simple and perhaps a bit fanciful, but the idea is to get you thinking about options. Learn to say no politely.   For example, if your boss is asking you can say something like “I want to say yes, but what can we move around in my current workload to make it work?” If a colleague is asking for something you need to evaluate the request and if it doesn’t align with your plans then you will need to  practice your skills in saying  no … politely. Learn to Ask for help politely. You will need help to succeed. Learn to ask for it when you need it. Learn to ask for it before you get too far down the path such that failure is imminent. Find a mentor (later Be a mentor) You may have been a mentor in Boy Scouts or other civic organizations. This is great experience for identifying and learning from a mentor. It will also help you later when you gain experience and become a mentor. One of the three best things Microsoft has is that they have a great mentorship program. Identify someone you think might be a good mentor. Then just ask them if they would be willing to be your mentor. If they say yes then you can work out the ground rules and timing. Most people I’ve asked have said yes. Exit Strategy During your interview you probably should NOT tell them you are working on your exit strategy. However, you should absolutely have a plan for where you want to go next. As I mentioned at the beginning … everyone is an entrepreneur today. Even if you plan on being at the same company or in the same field for a very long time you still need to think ahead for what’s next. PUP Pick up (the) Phone This may seem simple and obvious, but it can save a lot of time, effort and headaches. Instead of sending yet another text or email … just pick up the phone. Call your colleagues, call your partners, call your customers. Trust me … they will appreciate the effort. Read  â€" Yes, Read More You might have thought your reading days were over. They aren’t Here’s something you may not have thought about … Read Stuff from OTHER industries. I think you will find something interesting in collateral and content from other industries. When you realize what it is … drop a note in the comments. The first few to comment might get another surprise from me. Join Toastmasters People that can speak well will be able to get their point across and help themselves and others in so  many ways. Improving Your Speaking Skills is Worth Your Time Give Back You may not have money (or maybe you do), but you do have something to give. Figure out what that is And GIVE. You will be surprised how much you learn by the simple act of giving. Above All Be Nice It’s not hard to put on a smile and think about the bigger picture. Sure, things will go wrong. Issues will arise. Those that can keep their composure will be able to grow and move past them. Avoid and isolate mean people. There are enough cynics in the world. Dont be one or become one. One Last Tip … Pay It Forward. Take the time to do something nice for someone else every day. There ya go. Ten Tips for the New Grad. But mistakes irritate strangers, and interviewers in particular do not have any reason to forgive. An interview is an opportunity to demonstrate your skills and capabilities, showing that you are incapable is a sure way not to get hired. Take some basic precautions to avoid following these recent examples. Arriving on the wrong day A candidate arrived for his job interview a full week early. He said he thought he might have got the date wrong but as he had deleted the email inviting him and not written it down anywhere he thought he would turn up anyway to be on the safe side. Early is better than late, at least he didn’t miss his interview but he did show himself to be disorganised which was not a good first impression to make. Precautions to avoid this mistake Save any and all correspondence related to your job hunting. Note interview dates and times in more than one place. Using your phone as an organiser is great but it’s worth writing important dates down too, just in case your phone breaks, runs out of charge, gets lost or stolen. Incomplete location details A prospective student came to the Careers Service looking for her degree entry interview. She had the University postcode for the satnav, but she had not brought the name of the person who was supposed to interview her, or the details of the room or building where the interview was due to take place. Precautions to avoid this mistake Print and take along all instructions you are sent. Check that you not only have the full address but also directions to anywhere you are unfamiliar with. Map apps are really helpful on the move but it is worth having a paper map as a backup, in case of technical failure. You should take with you the name, job title and contact details of the interviewer plus a general phone number for the company in case you encounter serious difficulties en route and need to inform them. Forgetting the details of the job you applied for A graduate gets shortlisted for a job, they look at the company website or job site to refresh their memory of the job details and find it has been removed. This one happens all the time, some graduates even forget which companies they have applied to! Precautions to avoid this mistake. Organise your files, both electronic and paper. Save the job description and copy of your final application into folders clearly labelled with job title and organisation name. If online application systems do not permit you to save a copy of your form cut and paste the information into a Word file. It is useful to create a document for each job you apply for, so that you don’t get mixed up. Note: where you saw the vacancy, date applied, date by which you should hear back if shortlisted (if known), and details of any correspondence/phone calls that you have with the organisation (date, time, name of contact, what was discussed). But a brand isn’t static. Instead, it’s a dynamic, living, breathing asset that should transform as you and your market changes. Trends come and go. Customer needs change. The skills and services you offer expand or contract. Through all these changes, your brand should adjust, otherwise you might become outdated, boring or forgotten in the marketplace. The best example of this phenomena in action is in the publishing industry. Amazon.com has transformed buying, reading and publishing, and the decades old publishing houses and bookstores are lagging further and further behind because they’ve held too closely to the old ways that once worked, instead of evolving as technology and consumer needs changed. While you create your brand mission and the strategies to convey your brand, your market is the place to discover whether its doing its job. Once a year, conduct a market survey to get answers and feedback on how well you’re reaching your target audience and how it feels about your brand. 1) Are you the business your market thinks of first when they need your product or service?  Asking your market about what company it thinks of first in your industry is a great way to gauge the strength of your brand. Your hope is that your market will say it thinks of you first and only, but if you’re not keeping up, the answer could be it doesnt think of you at all. Asking why consumers dont think of you first can yield a great deal of information about why your market is thinking of another business and clues as to what you can do establish your business in the forefront of consumers minds. 2) When your market sees or hears the company name or logo, what comes to mind?  This question gets to the heart of your brand. If responses match your brands message and mission, youre doing your job. Negative responses or answers are different from the image you want to portray should be analyzed to find areas that you can improve. 3) How well are you meeting the needs of your market? Although many consumers want to be loyal, if another company comes along offering more or better products and services, they’re going to switch. Following up this question by asking how you can do better or what customers need or what from your company will give you feedback to improve your products or services. 4) Does or would your market recommend your business to others?  This question is included in nearly all feedback surveys because it lets you know how much your customers really believe in your business.  Some consumers stay with a business not out of loyalty or love, but out of habit or convenience. That’s all nice and well, but if they don’t value your business enough to mention it to others, that should be a concern. Brands that with staying power have consumers that are happy to give a referral or rave about service. They stay because they love the business, not because they’re too lazy to find a new resource. You are the expert in the delivery of your product or service, but you’re not the authority in how your market perceives your brand. Market surveys can reveal what you’re doing right and areas you can improve in to give your business staying power. As CEOs Go Out The Door, Who Is Coming In Okay, not all the CEOs in the 2014 September CEO Report at Challenger, Gray Christmas, Inc. are going out the door because they are being booted out, but the report does highlight a rise in the planned CEO departures for September. The 124 CEOs who left their positions represent  an increase of 4.2% over the 119 leaving in August. Looking at this report, it is striking to see how many CEO changes there have been in the first nine months of 2014 1,009 turnovers were tracked, most of them in the health care industry. What does this mean for executives who hope to move into C-level positions? Be Ready To Move When The Door Opens If you are serious about being considered for a position like President, CEO, CIO, CFO, and all the rest of the senior/C-level jobs, you need to also be serious about your resume, your executive branding, and every detail that you are presenting to the world. It isnt enough to collect the experiences that qualify you for the job, those experiences have to be presented convincingly to persuade people that you are the best candidate for that job. Monitor your online presence and deal with unprofessional lapses now. Look over your resume and make sure it is updated regularly. Consider your current level of expertise and actively seek to hone those skills. Present yourself in a competent, professional manner worthy of the level you seek to attain. Consider your current job an opportunity to show what you can do by doing it with excellence. Research and learn what will be needed to move into that new opening when it comes. Many of the CEOs in the Challenger study were actively grooming their replacement. That means someone was getting ready to step into their shoes as soon as the position opened up. Other C-level openings were vacant while the company scrambled to find the replacement. Whether you do the groundwork yourself, or get professional services to help you, the best way to move up the executive ladder is by being prepared to act when the door opens.
